Can Legacy Systems Cope? Why You Must Modernise Data Infrastructure | Agile

Can your old data infrastructure and architecture cope with the new demands?

When Clive Humby declared that “Data is the new oil” in 2006, how many people predicted that around 402.74 million terabytes of data are being created every day and a predicted 181 zettabytes of data will be created in 2025?

It’s no surprise that organisations from SMEs to global corporations and local councils to national governments need systems, tools and processes to keep up with all the data being generated, captured, copied or consumed.

Data Management Strategy

The first step to managing your data is understanding what different teams and functions in your organisation mean by ‘managing’. Some may see it as replacing legacy technology or systems that are outdated or unable to keep up with the demand for data, whilst others may see it as implementing new systems or technologies such as AI. Competing priorities within organisations are commonplace, so it’s vital to get agreement on the goals that your organisation wants to achieve.

Before you begin to add any new technologies or platforms into the mix, your current architecture and infrastructure needs to be thoroughly understood. Data may be stored in different places combining on-premises, cloud or hybrid and across unrelated platforms,

If your architecture doesn’t enable data to be accessed, classified, secured or utilised effectively and efficiently, then your organisation will never be able unlock the power of data.

The Business case for Data Management

In a report by Aberdeen Research and Hewlett Packard, businesses that modernise their server infrastructure are 80% more likely to see increased performance and 40% more likely to reduce IT costs and expenses.

McKinsey reported that building and maintaining infrastructure software and hardware consumes between 8% and 15% of overall IT budgets. However, targeted improvements to redesign and automate core processes and integrate advanced technologies can help organisations to cut annual data spend by 5% to 15% in around six months, with the savings more than doubled in the longer term.

Managing your systems and platforms may seem daunting. That’s why we work with you to understand your data landscape, your aims and objectives and your organisation’s experience and data literacy. We are a technology agnostic data consultancy and will identify the right platforms, integrations and transformations that are appropriate for your requirements, that can be implemented incrementally and are scalable for future growth.
